For A/C Efficiency, Avoid Manual "Fan On" Thermostat Settings
Grasping the purpose of central air conditioning and understanding how to operate a programmable thermostat carry not the same meaning. The fan on your air conditioning system may appear to perform in a manner similar to a standard room fan, but the method of air management is entirely different. Fans in HVAC systems are designed for distribution of cool air. Freestanding house fans are designed to create a local wind-chill effect.
Central Air Conditioning, Window Units, And House Fans
For principle functionality, air conditioning removes hot air from within your home and then redistributes cooler air. Central A/C systems disperse condenser-chilled air throughout your home. Window units, even though occasionally purposed for cooling an entire house, are typically installed for single room usage. Freestanding fans, including window and attic fans, do not remove heat from the air; they simply activate wind turbulence, which enables your body to more easily release sweat.
TIP! Reduce your heating bill - turn up the temperature setting on your thermostat and then drink more cold water. Keeping the thermostat a little higher generates big savings during summer heat waves. For additional savings, try adding a few daily cold-water showers to your routine.

The air processes through the external condensing coils and is then re-circulated back to the inside furnace unit. The system then disburses the cool air back into your home. Although evaporation plays a role in the functions of a central A/C system, the core result is nothing like the results produced by a standard room fan, ceiling fan or even attic fan. The fan on your central HVAC unit is neither designed for or should be used as a regular home fan unit.
TIP! When taking away-from-home vacations, set the thermostat on your HVAC system no more than five degrees apart from your standard setting. Differences of more than five degrees can damage the contents in your house - especially during the summer when the Arizona temperatures swell into the triple digits.
Under normal conditions, you should never set your central A/C fan mode to "Fan On" only mode. Your unit is not designed for such extensive "Fan On" performance. Thus extended use of "Fan On" only mode increases room humidity while decreasing the efficiency of your HVAC system. It may even damage your HVAC system.
